São Jorge num dia

São Jorge in a day

Sempre a subir e a descer.

São Jorge island in Azores is just stunning: because of their morphology, aesthetic, geographical details, traditions and scenic beauty. It's a piece of heaven on earth. That territory, 53 kilometers long and eight kilometers wide, it reaches the thousand meters high, hence its steep slopes, cliffs and of course fajãs, part of a cliff that rebated and are hard to reach and place where people live and some spend years without leaving. "It's happened that after heavy rains some roads are destroyed and the population is isolated for months until the repair is completed," the guide tells me. The most important is the north side, since the south is less steep. It was there where the force of the sea, during millenniums, who sculpted this whole coastal area, knocking down walls hundreds of meters high, pulling debris, fossils, ashes and volcanic stones back to the sea. What remains is breathtaking: a continuous dark wall, lined with heather, bushes and grass, where seagulls, blackbirds and buzzards nest. Here above, in the viewpoint of the fajã dos Cubres, I can spot the ocean in its infinitude, scattered clouds that come up against the mountains a wild wind that chills my spine and an unforgettable inner peace. There is harmony, clean air and the sounds of nature that surrounds me. I and my sister are there to admire the spectacular scenery, amazed at the corners of this Portugal almost unknown.
São Jorge can be seen in one day. I enjoyed my stay in the archipelago with all my time dedicated to Faial and Pico, the other two vertices of this insular triangle. But I wanted to see a little bit of the third island. So I hired a guide, a jeep, and ran the road that links the island from one side to another. We started by Velas location where the boat docked, a few minutes after ten in the morning. São Roque do Pico to Velas port are 13 kilometers by the sea and it takes about half an hour the groove. Once we get into the car, we went up toward the tip of Rosais across the Sete Fontes Forest Park. From there, you can see the immensity of the meadows and crop fields, separated by walls of black rock or hydrangea clusters. The flower is present in every corner, roads, viewpoints, ridges, valleys, streets, and vessels of the Azores. They are the brand image and they paint color across the horizon. It's simply divine.
We travel to the east during the rest of the day trip. We stopped at several important points to breathe clean air, soothe the soul and fill the spirit with good vibes. After we went down to fajã dos Cubres, we turn up, curve against curve, to circumvent the mountain toward the top of the island to again back down to Calheta, where we had lunch. With full stomach, the tour continued. Always up and down. One minute by the sea, the other going through fog banks, clouds that drag slopes above. We make a stop at the viewpoint of the Pedras Brancas and halfway to the top we visited the cheese factory, in Santo Antao. For about an hour we walked the corridors and rooms smelling of curdled milk and fresh cheese. The cold air reaches the bone, so it is advisable to go well wrapped up. In the end, you can taste the three varieties of cheese. I am suspect, but it is the best cheese there is. Juicy, slightly spicy, not too hard or too soft. It can be eaten without bread or anything. It's delicious.
And then we set off to the east tip, where we saw the islet of Topo. That small territory of 20 hectares is privately owned by several heirs and is leased as grazing area for about €600 per year. Amazing, isn’t it? If it was mine, I would built my holiday home there. The small island is only accessible by boat, and do not have access pier. The landing is possible in only a few locations. And despite being integrated in the special protection area due to its richness in marine avifauna, the fact is that it is in an advanced state of degradation, due to the overgrazing of cattle and goats chopping all the existing flora there. The animals live there isolated and when they cross, they do it with water up to the belly during the low tide.
After we descend to the small pier top of Topo, we make the return trip to Velas in time to visit that small quiet and cozy location. For its historical interest, the building of the town hall is one of the most important in the town center, which is a rare example of the Azorean baroque. Those white walls trimmed with the volcanic black stone are a constant view in the archipelago. In the harbor, where we caught the boat back to Pico island, we can still see the dock gate, built by Matias Avelar, in stone, in 1797, that lasts until today.
Of course, like any other beautiful place, the island deserves a few days to discover it. There are plenty of activities such as hiking, canoying, diving, fishing, climbing and much more. And there will be the day that I’ll return. For sure.

Caminhada dura

Though journey

This was the reason why I came to Madeira: adventure. And that's what awaits me in the six kilometers ahead. I'm on the lookout Pico do Areeiro to gain the courage to face the enormous mass of fog that clogs the view 6000 feet high. What's beyond the white clouds? The unknown. For me, at least. For Aldónio, a friend of mine who agreed to accompany me on this day journey, it’s nothing new: "It's a shame to be so cloudy because the view from here is impressive". The weather in Madeira is always unpredictable. Down the coast, it’s certainly a scorching day, but here it seems almost a winter day. There are hundreds of tourists who do this trip every day. Today it’s my turn, toghether with my poor sister (who his only 14 years old) and my friend who made this same trip a few years earlier. It’s 10 am in a August day but it must be less than 50 ° F. We rub our hands together, I take my coat to wrap Marta with and then we were ready to began our walk.
After we take off from Areeiro, a few meters ahead there’s Manta's Nest viewpoint, although it is impossible to glimpse anything at all. We skirted Pico das Torres up a steep climb through a staircase carved in the rock and then a descent. We must walk about 1600 feet, although with thick mist around us we lose track of space. Where have we been? Where are we going to? Nobody knows.
Sometime after this true stress test, we are faced with a demanding descent. Something seems easy but the steps succeeding to an endless rhythm. Lost count them and just think of reaching the end. The wind blows hard on the slopes facing north and 10 ° C seem now less 5 ° C! The wind and the water droplets turn the cold even more colder. After half an hour and our hair and eyelashes are wetted. Our voices is echoed off the mountains walls. It's just us and nature.
After an hour, my fear that this will be a disappointed day just disappear. Gradually, the fog dissipates and some sun rays pierce and illuminate the surrounding white robe. Gradually we can glimpse the first valleys and the full beauty of the landscape and the view begins to fill our eyes. Before you know it the air is clean again. It's exciting to pass over a basaltic dike that separates the headwaters of the streams of Fajã da Nogueira and Cidrão and, in the middle of the trip, we could glimpse the Pico do Gato at 5500 feet high and cliffs that challenge climbers.
A tunnel about 328 feet long and six feet high enters the bowels of the mountain. After leaving it we find the Fajã da Nogueira and the loins of São Roque do Faial. Some paths can be very narrow, which can scare a little bit. There are strings and support points, but there’s a need for extra attention. Curve after curve we find Pico Grande and, after some time, we glimpse, west, the wind towers sown over Paúl da Serra.
There’s second 650 feet long tunnel, the longest of the five tunnels this route, which runs through the bowels of the Pico das Torres. We leave behind Curral’s brook and, as we get out the tunnel, with mostly sunny sky, we view Seca do Faial’s brook. The temperature begins to rise and is no longer necessary the coat. We completed the rest of the journey suffocating with exhaustion. The final part of the trip it’s also the hardest, by the way. It's always up through harsh terrain, but we are surrounded with the most beautiful landscapes though. There are big slopes west, deep valleys and breathtaking summits at east. The valley of river Grande de São Jorge and Santana river are the most beautiful places of the trip.

Near the peak shelter, close do Achada do Teixeira there’s the Homem de Pé, or the standing man, a basalt formation which resembles the shape of a standing man. The route, about two miles long, has a nice, smooth surface and does not reach an hour walk. The problem is that it's always going up. There’s dangerous, although protected, sections of the road, some very destroyed which begs for some attention. The clear sky allows us to appreciate a little more fauna and flora. There are Violet Wood and many other plants and birds. And as we approach the end of the first part of the day, the bottling walkers is higher. Dozens of people with tired sweaty faces accumulates on the same narrow path, but we are all amazed with the views. We forced the last stretch to the top of the Pico Ruivo, each step feels like torture. We're nearly finishing a three hours walk and I start to think about the return journey. However, all the concerns disappear when we reached the top of the mountain. At 6500 feet above sea level we have the world at our feet. The sea, valleys, small villages and to the Pico do Areeiro, at south, where we started the day, seems so close. "You see there, Marta?", I say, pointing to the horizon, "now we have to walk all the way back". I think, by the look she gave me, that she was not very happy.

O que custa é descer

Difficult is to go down

A calma é surpreendente.

To go up is very difficult. It is a constant struggle against the laws of physics. Tiptoed, hard breathing and feeling almost like the heart is pumping out of the chest. I look up every minute, maybe second, waiting for the top to be there, just around the next bend. " We’re almost there", says the guide. I have a feeling that I heard "almost there" too often for the last hour and a half. I like to walk, seriously. I think it's the best way to see the world and there are place only worth it to go on foot. It’s the case of Pico Mountain, the highest point in Portugal, situated on the island of Pico in the Azores archipelago. But for those who do it infrequently is a climb that seems to take forever. But the landscape is worth the effort and the end is an apotheosis.
We start from the House of the Mountain, 3600 fett above sea level, in the early morning, the official point to the beginning of the tour that lasts an entire day. It is possible to climb the five kilometers of rail alone, because the route is simple and is marked with concrete poles. But the frequent fog, strong winds, sudden rain, the temperature differences and the slope of the land advise us to take someone with plenty of knowledge. I went with a minor under 14 years, so I had to follow the rules. In the House of Mountain it’s necessary to pay € 2,5 fee, if through a tourist circuit already purchased, or €10 fee if you go alone. In exchange, it is provided a GPS tracker. Water, sunscreen, food and we are ready for adventure.
The climb is made by the west side with Madalena harbor below, Faial behind our backs, and, to the north, the island of St. George. We were lucky and all day we only saw the sun and scattered clouds that painted the sky and were important to mark the altitude: it is not every day that we see the top of clouds. The undergrowth, especially lichens, shrubs and low herbs enables us to appreciate even more the landscape. The sea accompanies us throughout the walk and the silence too. It is so quiet and amazing. Nothing is heard except the empty air. There are no cars, motorbikes or other people unless our group of ten. Fatigue leaves little room for conversation which becomes very casual and you can always move away and admire all the immensity. It is sublime. We feel, literally, that we are on top of the world. The aesthetic perfection of the whole island, that you can enjoy in a boat ride, it is felt here: the colors of the meadows are dotted with black and white cattle; old boilers are blurred along the slopes, traces of turbulent times are like the rings of the earth; and there is there’s always the contrast between the two shades of blue, sky and sea, which are separated on the horizon in a great, infinite line. Everything is beautiful and stunning. We stop several times, just to turn our back to the mountain to catch our breath and look around. "You see down there, Marta?" I point to the piece of sea that separates the Faial from Pico. "That speck is the boat that brought us to the island. It seems so small, isn’t it? "I see my sister smiling and I feel happy to be there with her, alone, to show her how big is the world.
The more we climb, the slower and painful becomes the steps. There are some dropouts, people who by virtue of age, are required to recognize fatigue. "It is better to do so" admits the guide, experienced man, 45, who does this every week. "The descent is much worse and there are people who simply cannot stand until the end. And I'd rather carry your sister on my back than an 176 pounds woman”. I stand there for a moment to see them turn back. I’m sorry for the decision and I say goodbye while the guide returns to the path: "We’re almost there". Are we really? I have my doubts.
After nearly three hours we reach the crater of the volcano, almost 7500 feet above sea level and almost 16000 feet from the ocean floor. The area is nearly half a mile in diameter and is composed mainly of rock and is used as a resting point for campers who decide to spend the night there. The experience, they say, is more complete because you can enjoy the sunset and sunrise in a surprising way.
There’s the last bit: Piquinho or Pico Pequeno, a 229 feet high rock rise that comes out from the east side of the crater which is newer in a geological point of view. It's like the icing on the top of the cake. After a break and a full stomach, we resumed walking. From here you must climb rock and be careful with the stones that can drop under the feet of those who go up. Sometimes, between rocks, emerges small heat outputs of heat and among some recesses there’s sulfur emanating in vapor clouds. The volcano is still officially active and, according to the experts, it is certain that in the future, the whole mountain will blow up with a huge eruption. That's what has happened to all the other eight islands, ancient volcanoes, which were swept away and formed the  islands. Pico, with its sharp ridge, is still waiting for an implosion so that she can become more like their counterparts. Hopefully, though, we hope it will take several millions of years.
And after enjoying all that it is time to return, now it is always down. It can only be a piece of cake, right? No, wrong. With the muscles tired of the climb, the body begins to weaken. The quadriceps support the impact body weight and in the middle of the route begins to be complicated to walk. Pain arise in areas where I never felt before and in muscles I did not know that existed. Is it because I’m old? Heck, I’m only 38! After nearly six hours enjoying the sea, the green landscape, the blue sky and the silence of the mountain, nothing excites me anymore. My sister hops from rock to rock, light as a feather. Yes, it must be an age problem. The guide passes by when I take a moment to regain strength, I crouch, put my hands on my knees and take a deep breath. "We’re almost there” he says. He can only be kidding me.
