Feliz Natal

Merry Christmas

Feliz natal.

It's amazing how Christmas has taken hold of our culture. What was a small Western religious tradition, it has become a huge event worldwide that few manage to escape, as some countries in the Middle East, Africa, Russia and little more. There are dinners with co-workers; the secret friend gift party became mandatory in the office, at school and among friends; thousands of candy fill the windows of pastries; television repeats the same Christmas programs to exhaustion; on the radio Mariah Carey marks the spot again and again; in theaters animated movies fill half of the poster; and there are Disney like shows everywhere. I still remember the 1990s, with just one film session on RTP1 TV in the afternoon and a great debut on the 24th and other one on New Year's Eve; Christmas at the Hospital was a TV show that glued millions of people to the screen waiting for the performance of Herman Jose.
One year, my Christmas wish was to have "My Diary RTP", a book year that was publicized in the only two TV channels that existed at the time, and had illustrations and curiosities for the 35 days of the year. And I was so happy when I received it! I was malveled! It may seem a ridiculous gift and a silly dream in the eyes of today kids. My parents were not even poor, but that the world was very different: there were no mobile phones, no computers, no internet or cable TV, or play stations, or branded clothes, no money in droves. The appeal to consumption was moderate or nonexistent. I'm overwhelmed when I think of the contrast between that time and today. And it is then that I get struck with a nostalgic thud that I think should affect most people who read me and that are around my age, 39 years old. But when I look around, it seems that no one remembers it at all. We are too overwhelmed with the present and contemporary concerns that we not realize the differences and that we even lived a different childhood in the 1980s and 1990s, and that we are now addicted in another reality. I feel that I am betraying my roots, my past, trying to flee from my own childhood, embarrassed, as if to repudiate a speech that was so typical of my parents. "Yes, I will not slaughter my children with my talk of the past, because that's just silly." However, I am proud and, I admit, I miss a lot all thohse days. I lived in another time, when the things where bought with pennies and ice cream could cost only $0.10!. It displeases me the garbage we produce and how we're all screwing up the planet with both plastic toys and electronic gadgets that we throw into the trash every year and that are built from minerals that are extracted from the heart of the earth. And it scares me that no one do anything. It seems that we are powerless from large companies, television stations, advertising that fills us with superfluous desires.
So my wish, this Christmas, is that you can pause a bit. Turn off the TV, fill your house with family and friends, tell them how much you love them, take a walk, and fill your holidays with love, care and affection. Because that's what makes us human and that's what immortalizes our lives. I really wish you a home full of love. Merry Christmas.

Natal cheio de projetos

Christmas full of books

Prometo!

It's been a Christmas full of book orders and I am so happy. Lots of people with stories to tell and I both thrilled and emotional by the surprises that will emerge in so many christmas trees. Step by step, I'm making storybook a small business that gets me excited and confident about the future. I confess that the route has been difficult: not everyone understands the concept of personalized books or print on demand and recognizes the value of our memories. At a time when we are inundated with digital cameras, mobile phones with built-in lenses, facebook, and so on, it is easy to lose the memories of our days.
I am very critical of the way we deal with our daily lives. I love new technologies, I think the future can be bright if we know how to use computers, the Internet as we wait the wonders that science has yet to reveal us. As everything you need to know how to use in moderation and choose the positive side of things. However, one thing is spending hours on facebook with trifles, another is to learn about new subjects, click exciting news or see the most stunning videos. The same is true for television, magazines, books and movies. The world does not stop and we have to know how to follow the best of this reality. It's just that there are so many artists, comedians, writers, photographers, teachers, students, singers, musicians, and so much more, it is impossible to remain indifferent to all this. There is so much to learn!
However, it is important to take a break. We are reaching a point where we no longer know what we keep in our computer or smartphone. That's what I appreciate in this brand that I created: to register in a print on demand book our life can be a great exercise of introspection. And the very simple subject can be an excellent excuse: marriage, dating, pregnancy, birthday, travel ... or all together in a biography. It's so nice to go to the vault and look for those forgotten images and remember where they were taken, why and when. It's a way to learn about our lives.
It is always with emotion that I get the images of my clients and I try in my own way, of course, find a thread to tell the story. And this Christmas there is something for everyone: the children that will give a book after father's 80th birthday; the boyfriend who will give a present to his girlfriend who lives far away; the mother and wife who prepared a surprise for the children and husband; the mother who wanted to send a message to the child coming of age; or the son who wanted to tell her mother how much he loves her. The mailbox was filled with black-and-white photos, some yellowed with time and many downloaded thought the phone. The talks with all these clients were always a discovery and an emotion. Even before I hung up the phone, I begin to imagine the lives, feelings, ups and downs of each caracter and get emotional myself. I feel an immense pride in my work and I'm very thankful to so many people who have trusted me to record their lives in a book. I hope I'll create great Christmas moments in the house of so many people. Tears will run, lots of emotion will entagle and my soul will be even more crowded after so much sharing. Soon, I'll show you more. I promise!
