Suspense soft

Nunca tinha lido algo do Stephen King e, por isso, decidi arriscar. Nem sou fã do género de terror, embora goste de suspense. Acompanhei algumas séries baseadas em obras do escritor norte-americano, como “A Cúpula”; lembro de ter visto um filme, há muitos anos, a partir de um livro carismático dele, “It, Aquilo”, mas que me dececionou bastante; e pouco mais. Como tal, fui deixando os livros deste autor para o fim. Até ver, há uns dias, numa prateleira da livraria, este “Bem-Vindos a Joyland”. A capa, convenhamos, é sugestiva: o mundo do circo, um palhaço assustador, número um do New York Times e depois a descrição: “Por detrás do brilho das luzes, escondem-se as trevas”. Há sempre que dar um desconto à publicidade feita pelas editoras, obviamente. Mas o enredo parecia ser interessante: a história de um crime, praticado num comboio fantasma, envolvido em mistério, e Devin Jones, um estudante universitário, abandonado pela namorada, que decide investigar este homicídio perverso. O livro tem menos de 300 páginas, mas, bolas, é uma seca e peras! Não há terror, nem suspense, nem aventura, nem mistério, nem sustos, nada. Zero. Durante todo o livro, a personagem principal deambula entre a casa onde está hospedado e o circo onde trabalha e nada acontece. Conhece uns colegas de trabalho originais, feirantes, agarrados ao passado; depara-se com uma mãe e um menino com distrofia muscular, sem praticamente nenhuma relevância na trama e, depois, o mistério do crime, com traços macabros, mas que nem sequer é o fio condutor da história. Fica quase em segundo plano. O livro trata, sim, da história de um jovem, saído da universidade, que levou um pontapé da namorada e que não sabe o que fazer à vida. Agrada-lhe ganhar uns trocos, passar o tempo numa cidade à beira mar e descobrir o mundo circense. E pronto, é isto. Ah, sim! No final, mesmo nas últimas páginas, há umas cenas de ação, talvez só mesmo uma cena, em que o crime é desvendando numa noite de tempestade. Está bem escrito? Sim. As personagens são interessantes? Sem dúvida. Queremos ler até ao fim? Claro, como posso eu saber quem cometeu o crime? Não sou batoteiro! Mas, custa arrastar o olhar e virar cada página. O bom é que já posso dizer que li um livro do Stephen King. Obrigado.

I had never read anything from Stephen King, and so I decided to risk this one time. I am not the horror genre fan, but I like suspense. I watched some series based on works of this American writer, as "The Domme"; I remember watching a movie, many years ago, from one of his classics, "It" but it disappointed me a lot; and that was it. So, I was leaving his books behind. Until, a few days ago, when I saw in a bookstore "Joyland" The cover, let’s face it, it is suggestive: the world of the circus, a scary clown, a New York Times number one and then the description: "Behind the bright lights, the darkness is hidden." We always have to discount a little bit the marketing strategy from the publishers company, of course. But the plot seemed interesting: the story of a crime committed in a ghost train, wrapped in mystery, and Devin Jones, a college student, abandoned by his girlfriend, that decides to investigate this vicious murder. The book has less than 300 pages, but boy, is a dry as a desert! There is no terror, no suspense, no adventure, no mystery, not scary moments, nothing. Zero. Throughout the book, the main character wanders from the house where he is staying and the circus where he works and nothing happens. He meets some funny co-workers that have no preponderance in the story, there’s the popular fair vintage ambience which can be appealing, and, in the middle, a mother and a boy with muscular dystrophy, whom virtually have no relevance in the plot. Then, after all this, the mystery of the crime, with macabre features, but that is not even the main thread of the story. It is in the background almost. The book is, rather, the story of a young boy, out of college, who was kicked by his girlfriend and did not know what to do to with his life. He wanted to earn some cash, spending time in a seaside town and discover the circus world. That's it, nothing else. Ah yes! In the end, even in the last pages, there some are action scenes, maybe just even a one scene where the crime is unfolded on a stormy night. It is well written? Yes. The characters are interesting? No doubt. We want to read to the end? Of course, how am I supposed discover who committed the crime? I'm not a cheater! But it is difficult. Oh, boy it is. The good thing is that, now I can say that I read a book by Stephen King. Thank you very much Stephen.
